The visit of Bertram Chapman MBE - (Who cares?)

Wow, what a morning/afternoon. Two days ago we received a call in relation to our application to join the AMU. Nothing unusual in that I hear you say. Well the caller was non other than the esteemed genetleman, Bert Chapman MBE. For those of you who have come through the Macbeth Centre for upholstery, the name may be familiar. Bert Chapman holds the title of Master of the Worshipful Company of Upholders 2000-2001. He called to confirm a date and time for him to visit Barnett Upholsteries as the Quality Assessor for the Association of Master Upholsterers. An appointment was duly made and life at the workshop carried on as normal. We all tried to play it cool, laid back and chilled. You know, on the go-slow whilst each of us knew that the appointment was important.

This morning however we each came in with one focus. We cleaned, swept and polished the workshop to within an inch of its life. We talked about lunch at Papines the carribean takeaway close by and whether we should pap-in with Bert for a little carribean flavour. We moved furniture and chairs around just to make the place look stusch......

At the appointed hour, Mr Chapman and his better half walked through the doors and there was a quiet calm. Introductions were made and the assessment began. Bob took Bert through our company profile, the ning Upholstery Communiity, the e-learning, on-line shop and spoke about our in-house teaching. As an experienced upholsterer with over 25 years experience within the trade, Bob was very comfortable within his seat and Bert spoke with authority, admiration and enthusiasm about the positive steps we as a company were making in the name of Upholstery. Obviously we will have to wait and hear whether our application is successful. Berts comments were extremely positive so watch this space.

To my opening question, one final comment. Bert Chapman is the Serving Director and Past President of the AMU. He is the Son of Albert Chapman, the founder of Albert E Chapman Ltd. This firm is recognised within the upholstery and re-upholstery industry as leading exponents of traditional upholstery. The company was appointed Upholsterers to Her Majesty the Queen in 1989. Who cares? We do.
